Balancing Luck vs Skill

There is a moment in almost every game when a player asks:


“Was that my fault, or was I just unlucky?”

That question sounds simple, but it sits at the center of one of the hardest problems in game design.


Luck vs. skill... Too much skill, and a game can become exhausting, intimidating, or predictable. Too much luck, and players stop feeling that their decisions matter.


The interesting space is somewhere between the two. And for mobile games—especially puzzle, word, match-3, and hybrid-casual games—finding that space can make the difference between a game players understand and a game they want to keep playing.


Luck Isn't the Enemy of Skill


It is tempting to think of luck and skill as opposite ends of a spectrum.

They aren't necessarily.


A well-designed game can use randomness to create situations, while skill determines how effectively the player responds to them.


Consider a match-3 board. The initial board contains randomness. New pieces entering the board introduce more randomness. Cascades can occasionally produce extremely fortunate outcomes.


But the player still makes decisions:


  • Which move creates the best opportunity?

  • Should I use the booster now or save it?

  • Should I pursue the immediate objective or improve the board first?

  • Can I create a special piece?

  • How much risk should I take with the moves remaining?


Randomness creates uncertainty. Skill is what the player does with that uncertainty. That distinction is extremely important.


Why We Need Luck at All


Imagine a puzzle game in which every level always starts identically and every action produces completely deterministic results.


That isn't necessarily bad. Chess works pretty well. But many mobile games depend on replayability, accessibility, surprise, and relatively short sessions.


Randomness becomes a very useful design tool. Luck can create dramatic moments that designers couldn't practically script individually.


A cascade suddenly clears half the board. The exact letter you desperately need becomes available. A booster creates an unexpectedly powerful combination.

A player survives with one move remaining. These moments create something extremely valuable: stories.

“I somehow beat it on my last move.”

Without uncertainty, many of those moments disappear.


But Players Need to Believe They Earned the Win


This is where things become complicated. Players are perfectly happy to benefit from luck. They are considerably less enthusiastic about losing because of it.


If players repeatedly feel:

“There was literally nothing I could have done.”

then the game has a problem.


But there is another dangerous version:

“The game just decided to let me win.”

That can be almost as damaging. A great puzzle game creates the perception that: “I figured it out.” Luck may have helped. The level design may have helped. The game's systems may even have quietly helped. But the player's decisions should remain the protagonist of the experience.


Match-3: Controlled Chaos


Match-3 is probably one of the clearest examples of this relationship. Games such as Royal Match and Candy Crush contain enormous amounts of apparent randomness.


  • Pieces fall.

  • Cascades happen.

  • Boards evolve unpredictably.


Yet experienced players are clearly better than beginners. Why?


Because skill doesn't necessarily mean memorizing the correct solution.

It means understanding probabilities and opportunities.


A skilled player recognizes board structures, predicts cascades, creates combinations, manages objectives, and understands when a move that looks immediately useful may actually make the board worse.


The randomness keeps the board alive. The player's understanding gives that randomness meaning.


Word Games Have the Same Problem—Just in a Different Form


Word games initially appear far more deterministic. You either know a word or you don't.


But once puzzle mechanics, hints, limited resources, letter reveals, multiple clues, timers, or progression systems enter the picture, the relationship between luck and skill becomes much more interesting.


In a word association game, for example, one clue might immediately trigger the answer for one player while another player struggles. Was the first player more skilled? Maybe.


Perhaps they have a larger vocabulary or stronger associative reasoning. But perhaps the answer simply happened to connect with something they saw yesterday.


Human knowledge itself introduces a kind of randomness. This is one reason we think word-game difficulty is particularly difficult to balance. A word that is obvious to one player can be incredibly difficult for another.


Hybrid Casual Makes the Problem Even More Interesting


Hybrid-casual games combine simple interactions with deeper systems.

That means they often need two seemingly contradictory things.


  • The game must be understandable almost immediately.

  • But it must also provide enough depth for players to improve.


Pure skill can make the onboarding intimidating. Pure randomness can make progression meaningless.


A useful structure is therefore:

The player doesn't need twenty possible actions. Sometimes two meaningful choices are enough. The important part is that the player believes choosing correctly improved their chances.


Difficulty Shouldn't Mean “More Bad Luck”


One of the easiest traps in puzzle-game development is increasing difficulty by simply making favorable outcomes less likely.


Technically, the level becomes harder. But psychologically, something different happens.


The player doesn't think:


“This puzzle is challenging.”


They think:


“This game is screwing me.”


Those are completely different experiences. Good difficulty asks more from the player.


It might require better planning, better resource management, recognizing a more complicated pattern, combining mechanics, or making a difficult trade-off.

Randomness can amplify that challenge. It shouldn't replace it.


Losing Needs to Teach Something


One test we find particularly useful is asking:


After losing, does the player know what they could try differently?


If the answer is yes, skill probably has meaningful influence.


  • Maybe they wasted a power-up.

  • Maybe they focused on the wrong part of the board.

  • Maybe they committed too early.

  • Maybe they misunderstood the puzzle.

  • Maybe they simply need another strategy.


That creates one of the most powerful loops in games:


“One more try.”


But if the player's conclusion is:


“I guess I'll replay until the game gives me a better board,”


the loop becomes much weaker.


The player isn't trying again because they learned something.

They're pulling a slot machine lever.


The Player Should Be Able to Bend Probability


One principle we increasingly like is giving players ways to influence luck rather than removing luck entirely.


Power-ups are an obvious example. So are rerolls, hints, board manipulation, additional moves, special pieces, resource spending, strategic skips, or choosing between rewards.


These mechanics effectively tell the player:


“You cannot completely control what happens, but you can improve your odds.”


That creates agency. And agency is ultimately more important than whether the underlying system is technically random.


Luck Can Also Help Difficulty Feel Organic


There is another reason randomness is powerful. Not every player needs to experience exactly the same difficulty.


One player might struggle with a level and receive a fortunate sequence.

Another might immediately understand the mechanic and finish quickly.

Both move forward.


This can produce a much smoother difficulty curve than rigid deterministic puzzles—provided the variance remains within reasonable limits.


The danger comes when the difference between an easy run and an impossible run becomes too large. At that point, randomness stops creating variety and starts controlling progression.


What About Rubber-Banding?


This leads to a controversial subject: hidden assistance.


  • Should games subtly improve the player's odds after repeated failures?

  • Should a match-3 board become slightly more favorable?

  • Should useful pieces appear more frequently?

  • Should difficulty dynamically adapt?


There isn't one universal answer. Used carefully, adaptive systems can prevent frustration and keep players inside the experience.


Used aggressively, they can destroy trust. The best implementation is usually the one player's never consciously notice.


The objective shouldn't be:


“Make the player win.”


It should be:


“Keep the player in a situation where winning still feels possible.”


That is a very different design philosophy.


How We Think About It at Raviosoft


Across our own games, we increasingly think about luck and skill in terms of agency rather than percentages.


Instead of asking:


“How much of this game is luck?”


we prefer asking:


“How many meaningful ways does the player have to influence the outcome?”


A game can contain substantial randomness and still feel highly skill-based if players have enough tools to respond.


Conversely, a game can contain very little mathematical randomness and still feel arbitrary if players don't understand why they won or lost.


For puzzle and hybrid-casual games in particular, we like systems where players can understand the basic rules immediately but gradually discover better ways of manipulating those rules.


The first session should say:


“I understand how to play this.”


Later sessions should say:


“I'm getting better at this.”


Those are two very different achievements. A successful game needs both.


The Sweet Spot


We don't think the goal is to eliminate luck. And we don't think every game should become a pure test of skill.


Luck creates

  • surprise,

  • tension, and

  • variety.


Luck sometimes gives a struggling player an unforgettable victory.


Skill creates

  • mastery, and

  • agency.


Skill gives players a reason to believe the next attempt will be different.


The magic happens when they reinforce each other.


A player should sometimes think:


“That was lucky.”


But ideally, they should immediately follow it with:


“…and I knew exactly what to do with it.”


That may be one of the best places a game can be.
