Designing Difficulty Curves in Word and Match-3 Games

Have you ever wondered why some puzzle games keep you playing for months while others lose your attention after just a few levels?
The answer often isn't better graphics, bigger budgets, or even more creative mechanics.
It's the difficulty curve.
Whether you're revealing hidden words, matching colorful gems, or solving complex logic puzzles, the way a game introduces a challenge is one of the biggest factors determining whether players become lifelong fans or uninstall after ten minutes.
At Raviosoft, designing puzzle games like Reveal It! – The Word Puzzle Game, Rubi Blast, and Pop Dot have taught us that balancing difficulty is less about making levels harder and more about making players feel challenged while still believing they can succeed.
What Is a Difficulty Curve?
A difficulty curve describes how the challenge of a game evolves over time.
Contrary to what many people imagine, it shouldn't look like a straight line.
Instead, a good difficulty curve resembles a series of climbing gentle hills with ups-and-downs and sometimes with carefully designed spikes.

Players experience moments of mastery, followed by new challenges, then another period of confidence before the next obstacle appears.
This rhythm creates a satisfying sense of growth. If the game becomes difficult too quickly, players feel overwhelmed. If it stays too easy for too long, boredom sets in.
The goal isn't maximum difficulty.
The goal is continuous engagement.
What Research Says About Difficulty Curves
Game designers have been studying the relationship between challenge and player enjoyment for decades. While every game is different, several recurring themes emerge from the research.
One of the most influential concepts is Flow Theory, introduced by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. Flow describes the mental state in which a person's skill level closely matches the challenge they're facing. When a game is too easy, players become bored. When it's too difficult, they become frustrated. The sweet spot lies somewhere in between, where players feel stretched but capable.
This idea has heavily influenced modern game design, particularly in puzzle games and casual mobile titles. [1, 2]
More recent research on Dynamic Difficulty Adjustment (DDA) reaches a similar conclusion. Rather than treating difficulty as a fixed setting, researchers argue that games should continuously balance challenge with player ability to maximize engagement and long-term retention. However, they also caution that poorly implemented adaptation can feel unfair or artificial, so difficulty should always support the intended player experience rather than simply becoming easier whenever players struggle. For puzzle games specifically, recent studies have found that difficulty is more nuanced than simple completion rates. Factors such as how many moves players use, where they struggle within a level, and how different player cohorts perform all contribute to how "difficult" a level actually feels. This reinforces something many experienced designers already know: difficulty is as much about player perception as it is about statistics. [5, 6]
Why "Harder" Doesn't Mean "Better"
One of the biggest misconceptions in puzzle game development is that players eventually want extremely difficult levels.
In reality, most players don't enjoy constant failure. Most players are there to ease their loads, calm their brains, and enjoy a moment away of real-life stress.
People play casual puzzle games not only to relax but to prove themselves that they can be successful at something. The constant progress with experience of small moments of achievement is the key part to reach the relaxation, but to feel successful, each player must also have a few moments of struggle that can be overthrown in few attempts.
That's why successful games often alternate between:
Easy "reward" levels
Moderate challenge
Occasional difficult puzzles
Relaxing recovery levels
This pattern gives players time to recover emotionally before facing another tough challenge.
Without those recovery moments, frustration accumulates.
Yeat each game has a different set of formula depending on the genre, game mechanics, and the developer's own goals to achieve.
Designing Difficulty in Word Games
Word games introduce a unique challenge because difficulty isn't determined by enemy strength or reaction speed. The difficult isn't also determined by the vocabulary itself, because the same word may be easy to solve for you where as it may be very hard to solve some other person.
For example, a medical vocabulary may look very advanced for most players, but those who pursue a profession in medical industry the same word can be the easiest puzzle to solve.
Therefore, what we discovered is that word games require a multi-layer approach on difficulty including the actual complexity of the vocabulary, the current popularity of the vocabulary, and the information available.
Vocabulary Complexity
The simplest approach is using more obscure words. However, this isn't always the best solution.
Players generally enjoy solving words they recognize. Difficulty should come from deduction—not obscure dictionary entries.
A satisfying puzzle often uses familiar words arranged in ways that require thoughtful reasoning.
Vocabulary Popularity
Revealing the phrase "Jingle Bells" may be very intuitive for a player who plays the game around Christmas time but it sure will be harder to be solved during July.
When deciding the complexity of vocabulary, we must consider not only the obscruity or rareness of the words but also the current events. Soccer related vocabulary may be complext for the U.S. culture in general but during 2026 FIFA World Cup, the same vocabulary may be a piece of cake to the same culture.
Information Available
But most importantly, the amount of information given to the player dramatically changes perceived difficulty.
For example:
Number of revealed letters
Word length
Hints
Letter frequency
Visual clues
Even revealing a single vowel can transform an impossible puzzle into a satisfying one. The more the game assists you, the easier it will be for that word to be solved by you.
Resource Management
In addition to Vocabulary Complexity, Vocabulary Popularity, and Information Available, Resource Management creates yet another level of control on difficulty.
One of the defining mechanics of Reveal It! – The Word Puzzle Game is that every incorrect letter costs a reveal token.
That changes the player's mindset completely.
Instead of randomly tapping letters until something works, players begin thinking strategically:
Which letters are most likely?
Should I save my remaining tokens?
Is using a power-up worth it?
The puzzle becomes more than vocabulary—it becomes decision-making.
Designing Difficulty in Match-3 Games
Match-3 games rely on a different set of tools.
The board itself becomes the puzzle.
Developers can influence difficulty through:
Board Layout
Move / Time Limits
Objectives, and
Randomness
Board Layout
Open boards are naturally easier than boards divided by walls or blockers.
Small changes in layout often have a larger impact than changing the objective.
Move / Time Limits
One additional move or one additional second can reduce failure rates dramatically.
Many successful Match-3 games fine-tune move counts or time limits repeatedly during development. It's common for a level to change from 18 moves to 21 moves after playtesting—not because it's impossible, but because those three extra moves create a better emotional experience.
One quick note about move vs. time limits is that with move limits it is easier to create pre-designed boards rather than generating fully random boards. Pre-designed boards are visually more appealing since there is a familiar image shown to players such as a star icon, a questionmark, a smiley face etc.
Objectives
Collecting 30 blue gems feels very different from clearing jelly, breaking ice, or defeating an obstacle.
Each objective changes how players approach the board and variety prevents the gameplay from becoming repetitive.
Randomness
One of the most delicate balancing acts in Match-3 design is randomness.
Too much randomness makes players feel powerless.
Too little makes every level feel solved before it begins.
The best Match-3 games create the illusion that clever play—not luck—is responsible for success, even though randomness is always present behind the scenes.
Although pre-rendered boards are visually very appealing, well-designed randomness is needed to keep the gameplay flowing.
The Psychology of "Almost Winning"
One of the strongest emotional moments in puzzle games happens when players lose—but only by a tiny margin.
Imagine needing one more move or 2 more seconds to win. Or one more correct letter.
Those near victories often motivate another attempt far more effectively than an easy win. Designers sometimes call this the near-miss effect and it is one of the hardest ingredients in game design to balance. Sometimes it rquires countless gameplay tests by real people and it requires a controlled randomness. If your randomization algorithms are wild wih no rulesets, it is impossible to design "almost winning" moments.
These moments, when
Used sparingly, create determination,
Used too often, create frustration.
Teaching Without Explaining
Great puzzle games rarely overwhelm players with lengthy tutorials.
Instead, they introduce new mechanics gradually.
A typical progression might look like this:
Introduce a new mechanic in isolation.
Let players experiment safely.
Combine it with previously learned mechanics.
Increase complexity over several levels.
This approach respects players' intelligence while keeping the learning curve manageable.

Why Playtesting Matters More Than Planning
No spreadsheet can perfectly predict how difficult a level will feel. And bots do not have feelings, they are not frustrated, nor satisfied.
Developers often spend hours tweaking a puzzle that seemed perfect on paper, only to discover during testing that players either breeze through it or get stuck immediately.
That's why iteration is essential.
At Raviosoft, we believe that no level is truly finished until real players interact with it. So even after publishing the game, it is important to closely analyze gameplay data and optimize levels constantly at each update.
Watching players solve puzzles often reveals surprising behaviors:
They ignore mechanics you thought were obvious.
They discover strategies you never anticipated.
They struggle with levels you expected to be easy.
They breeze through puzzles you feared were too difficult.
Every playtest is an opportunity to improve—not just the level, but your understanding of player behavior.
Difficulty Is Emotional, Not Mathematical
Two levels can have identical statistics and feel completely different.
Why?
Because players don't experience spreadsheets. They experience emotions.
Confidence.,
Curiosity,
Frustration,
Relief,
Satisfaction, and more.
Designing a great difficulty curve means designing those emotions intentionally.
The numbers matter—but only because they influence how players feel.
Lessons We've Learned at Raviosoft
Working on our mobile games both word and Match-3 genres has reinforced several principles that guide our design process:
Players enjoy feeling clever more than feeling lucky.
Small victories are powerful motivators.
Recovery levels are just as important as difficult ones.
Tutorials should teach through play whenever possible.
Near misses can encourage another attempt—but only in moderation.
Every puzzle should leave players believing, "I can get it next time."

The Gaming Academy Lesson
One of the most valuable lessons we've learned at RavioSoft didn't come from a successful launch—it came from a rejection.
During the development of Rubi Blast, we submitted an early version to Voodoo's Gaming Academy, a program that evaluates promising mobile game prototypes and helps selected teams prepare for publishing.
The feedback was clear: our early-game retention wasn't where it needed to be.
Players were leaving too early because one of the first levels created a significant drop-off in the onboarding experience.
None of our assumptions were true for the players. "It was too easy" we said while design the level. Nevertheless, data revealed that it was the opposite. We haven't listened to Gaming Academy instructors, we followed our own intiutions, but we should have respected their experience in the industry.
At the time, we were focused on designing interesting puzzles. The Gaming Academy team reminded us countless times that before players can appreciate your clever mechanics, they first need to stay long enough to experience them.
That rejection was disappointing. We litererally bumped into a steel wall. Yet this failure also turned out to be one of the most valuable pieces of feedback we received.
Yes we have lost our chance to partner with one of the largest publishers in the mobile game industry but our game was showing strong signals, so we went back to the drawing board.
Instead of simply making the level easier, we asked better questions:
Was the objective obvious?
Were players learning the intended mechanic?
Did the level ask too much, too soon?
Was failure teaching players anything useful?
Were we rewarding experimentation?
After multiple iterations, countless playtesting sessions, and data reviews, we redesigned the early experience.
The result was a significantly healthier early-game funnel and much stronger retention metrics.
The lesson was clear: A single poorly tuned level can prevent players from ever discovering the best parts of your game.
We grew the game on that lesson, and now the same game provides very promising metrics.
Final Thoughts
A well-designed difficulty curve is invisible.
Players don't consciously notice it—they simply feel that the game is fair, rewarding, and hard to put down.
Whether you're uncovering hidden words or matching colorful tiles, the best puzzle games strike a delicate balance between challenge and achievement.
They encourage you to think without making you feel stuck, and they celebrate progress without making success feel effortless.
At the end of the day, great puzzle design isn't about creating the hardest levels.
It's about creating the next level players can't wait to try.
